Question tags are short questions added to the end of a sentence, and we use them to confirm information or to check if someone agrees with us. We use a positive statement with a negative tag, and a negative statement with a positive tag.

Test your English with this question tags quiz and improve your grammar by choosing the correct tag to complete each sentence.

Choose the correct question tag to complete each sentence (1–10).

1) I’m late again, ___?

Correct! Wrong!

"I am" uses the special tag "aren’t I" in English, because this is the standard form used instead of "am I not."

2) You’d like some tea, ___?

Correct! Wrong!

The sentence is positive, so we use a negative tag. "Would" in the sentence becomes "wouldn’t" in the tag.

3) She used to live here, ___?

Correct! Wrong!

"Used to" refers to the past, so the tag uses "did." The sentence is positive, so the tag is "didn’t she."

4) Let’s go home, ___?

Correct! Wrong!

With "let’s," the correct question tag is always "shall we," because it asks the listener to agree with the suggestion.

5) Nobody called you, ___?

Correct! Wrong!

"Nobody" has a negative meaning, so the tag must be positive. We use "they" as the pronoun after negative subjects.

6) Open the window, ___?

Correct! Wrong!

Imperatives (commands) take "will you" to make the request softer or more polite.

7) He never listens, ___?

Correct! Wrong!

"Never" makes the sentence negative in meaning, so the tag must be positive: "does he."

8) He’s been studying all day, ___?

Correct! Wrong!

The tag repeats the same auxiliary verb. Since the sentence uses "has been," the tag becomes "hasn’t he."

9) You’d better hurry, ___?

Correct! Wrong!

"You had better" always uses the fixed tag "hadn’t you," because the structure comes from the past form "had."

10) Don’t forget your keys, ___?

Correct! Wrong!

A negative command takes a positive tag. "Will you" is the natural tag used after "don’t."
